Here is the short version. A session with a Registered Psychotherapist in Toronto usually runs $120 to $250. My own fee is $200 for 50 minutes. Psychologists tend to charge more. Psychiatrists are covered by OHIP, but only with a referral.

What does therapy cost in Toronto in 2026?

Prices vary by the kind of professional you see. Here is the going range for each, based on standard private-practice fees in the city.

  • Registered Psychotherapist (RP): $120 to $250 per 50-minute session.
  • Psychologist: $200 to $300 or more per session.
  • Registered Social Worker offering therapy: $100 to $200 per session.
  • Psychiatrist: covered by OHIP with a doctor's referral.

Why do therapy fees vary so much?

A few things move the price. Training and credentials. Years in practice. Whether the therapist has a specialty and a waitlist.

A newer therapist often charges less while building a practice. A therapist with a niche often charges more. Neither number tells you how good the fit will be.

Does OHIP or insurance cover therapy?

OHIP does not cover private therapy with a Registered Psychotherapist. It covers psychiatrists and some hospital-based mental health care. It does not cover private sessions like mine.

Most workplace benefit plans do cover a Registered Psychotherapist. Coverage varies. Annual limits usually fall between $500 and $2,500.

Before you book, it helps to check four things with your plan.

  • Whether your plan covers a Registered Psychotherapist. Some cover only psychologists.
  • Your annual dollar limit for psychotherapy.
  • Whether you need a doctor's referral first.
  • Whether you pay up front and submit a receipt, or the therapist bills directly.

I give detailed receipts with my CRPO registration number. You submit them to your insurer for reimbursement.

What do I charge, and why?

My fee is $200 for a 50-minute session. That sits in the mid-to-upper range for a Registered Psychotherapist in Toronto. I do not offer a sliding scale right now.

I do not offer free consultations either. The people who do well in this work have usually decided it is a fit before they reach out. The reading on this site is the consultation.

My cancellation policy is 48 hours. Late cancellations and missed sessions are charged the full fee. Some exceptions apply.

I work virtually across Ontario. You do not need to live in Toronto to work with me. You need a private space and a steady connection.

Is therapy worth the cost?

At $200 a session, weekly therapy costs about $800 a month. That is real money. I am not going to tell you it is priceless.

Here is what I will say. If you have been managing your inner life from the outside for years, that management has a cost too. It is just harder to see on a bank statement.

Therapy is an investment in something you cannot get any other way. Not from books. Not from friends. And not from managing harder.

Common questions about therapy costs in Ontario

How much does a therapist cost per hour in Ontario?

Most Registered Psychotherapists in Ontario charge $120 to $250 for a session. Note that a session is usually 50 minutes, not a full hour. Psychologists charge more, often $200 to $300 or above.

Is therapy covered by OHIP in Ontario?

No. OHIP does not cover private therapy with a Registered Psychotherapist. It covers psychiatrists with a referral and some hospital-based services. Private sessions are paid out of pocket or through workplace benefits.

Does insurance cover a Registered Psychotherapist?

Most employer benefit plans do. Coverage varies by plan, with annual limits that usually run from $500 to $2,500. Check whether your plan names Registered Psychotherapists, since some cover only psychologists.

Why is therapy so expensive?

The fee reflects training, years of practice, and a limited number of client hours each week. It also covers preparation, notes, and professional development you never see.

Are online therapy sessions cheaper?

Not usually. Virtual sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist cost about the same as in-person ones. What you pay for is the work and the relationship, not the room.

Do therapists offer a sliding scale?

Some do and some do not. A sliding scale means reduced fees based on income. I do not offer one at this time. If cost is a barrier, ask directly, since many therapists keep a few lower-fee spots.
